The Westerly Hospital was recently honored to have Dr. David M. Donaldson, cardiologist with Cardiovascular Institute of New England, present heart anatomy training to our staff and students. Using pig hearts donated by St. Jude’s Medical in Minneapolis, Dr. Donaldson led two groups of more than 30 people in heart dissection. The pig hearts were generously donated by St. Jude’s Medical in Minneapolis. The unique learning opportunity benefited staff and students alike, as Dr. Donaldson, who also teaches at Brown University, mentored the group, demonstrating each part of the dissection and then visiting each participant to ensure that each sucessfully identified the structures. Donaldson provided an important review for staff and a wonderful opportunity for our nursing students.
Staff attending represented a wide array of hospital departments including the cardiac catheterization lab, cardiac rehabilitation, the medical care and surgical care units, as well as nuclear medicine, interventional radiology, and the EKG department. Eight nursing students participated. Attendees had very positive comments about the experience.
