 Hospital Board Chair Honored
In a luncheon ceremony held December 10, 2009 at the Boston Marriott Copley Place, Fred A. Allardyce, Chairman of The Westerly Hospital Board of Trustees, was awarded with the New England Healthcare Assembly’s 2009 Trustee Leadership Award.

This annual award recognizes and honors the significant contributions made by a hospital trustee in New England who has demonstrated exceptional leadership in the field of health care governance.

Fred Allardyce joined the Board of Trustees of The Westerly Hospital in 2000, has held officer positions including Secretary and Assistant Treasurer in 2004 and 2005, Vice Chairman in 2006 and 2007, and is completing the last year of a two-year term as Board Chairman.

During his tenure as Board Chairman, Mr. Allardyce and the Board oversaw many positive initiatives at The Westerly Hospital, including:

·                    Reduction in the Hospital’s net operating loss from $5.98 million in FY 2007 to $883,000 for the most recently completed FY 2009.

·                    The recruitment of twenty (20) new physicians to The Westerly Hospital Medical Staff.

·                    The development and successful implementation of a hospitalist program in 2008.

·                    Purchase of new capital equipment including digital mammography, stereotactic biopsy table, bone density machine, 32-slice CT Scan equipment, and new patient beds.

·                    The receipt of several Hospital awards including Baby Friendly Designation, Quality Partners Awards for surgical patient care, American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer Outstanding Achievement Award, Breastfeeding Friendly Workplace Award, and VHA Top Ranking for Patient Satisfaction.

·                    Creation of a Hospital advocacy committee to work with the Rhode Island General Assembly on budget and other issues affecting community hospitals.

·                    Launch of the Women’s Health Initiative, a $1,800,000 investment in health care services for the nearly 30,000 women who live in the Westerly and surrounding areas.

Mr. Allardyce credits the positive working relationship between the Hospital board, administration and medical staff, and the hard work and dedication of all employees for these positive accomplishments.

In 2007 and 2008, Mr. Allardyce was also an active participant on the (Rhode Island) Governor's Community Hospital Task Force and pushed to develop long-term solutions to the problems facing community hospitals in Rhode Island.

Fred Allardyce is the former Vice President & CFO of American Standard, and has held board leadership positions at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center in Westchester County, New York, before joining the board at The Westerly Hospital.
