With the attention we’ve paid to facilities construction and renovation at The Westerly Hospital over the past several years, there is virtually no patient care area that is more than ten years old. Our ambitious plans have led to: four new operating rooms, an eight-bed intensive care unit, our comfortably appointed Women’s Health Center, a completely renovated suite dedicated to the Hospital’s busy endoscopy service, a conveniently located Ambulatory Care Center, all-private medical and surgical inpatient rooms, and a large new emergency services department.

In September 2003, we proudly opened a diagnostic cardiac catheterization laboratory that reduces the number of times each year that patients must travel out of the area to receive this important examination. In October 2004, the Hospital acquired the latest “16-slice” CT imaging technology.

Emergency Department - A large, open nursing station is at the center of our new Emergency Department, which is part of the three-story Joseph J. Kirby Community Care Center opened in 2003. The 19 treatment bays are easily visible from the nursing station, which features the latest in computer equipment and ergonomic design. We also provide two minor-trauma rooms and the best in monitoring technology.

Medical Care & Surgical Units - As with our Emergency Department, The Medical Care and Surgical Units are located in the new Joseph J. Kirby Community Care Center. Each unit features 30 private rooms. Four “Family Rooms” on each unit are larger and can accommodate an overnight guest. The open concept design of the Nursing Stations makes communication convenient and efficient, and provides easy access to all patient rooms. Each unit contains the latest in telemetry monitoring systems.

Intensive Care Unit - Our Intensive Care Unit features a spacious and open nursing station with quick access and clear visibility to all eight patient rooms. The cardiac monitoring systems and ventilators are state of the art. When you combine these features with our efforts to become the first no-lift hospital in the state, you can see we’re working hard to provide you with the best working conditions in the region.

Diagnostic Imaging Department - A renovation and expansion project has given our Diagnostic Imaging Department the space required to provide all of our services efficiently in an uncluttered atmosphere.

Our new GE Lightspeed CT scanner, installed at the end of 2004, gives The Westerly Hospital one of the best pieces of diagnostic equipment in southern New England. We can perform a head-to-toe scan in less than one minute and deliver physicians clear, concise images. We also offer MRI, nuclear medicine, mammography, ultrasound, bone scan and x-ray.

Pathology Lab - Unlike many hospital pathology labs that are relegated to areas deep in the facility, our lab features an entire wall of windows and large, open work areas. In fact, our lab is frequently used as a model for other hospitals when they are planning renovations. We are equipped with the finest cutting-edge technology from Beckman Coulter for our chemistry, hematology and coagulation sections. There is simply no finer equipment around.
