The Westerly Hospital Auxiliary

The Westerly Hospital Auxiliary was founded in 1926 to serve Westerly Hospital and its patients by providing material assistance beyond the scope of the Hospital budget. This is accomplished through various fund raising events such as The Lights of Love in December, a spring Golf Outing at the Misquamicut Club, and the operation of the Hospital Gift and Coffee Shops. The Auxiliary also sponsors special events, educational lectures, a scholarship program, and community relations activities.

In the past year the Westerly Hospital Auxiliary has donated over $100,000 to the Hospital for the purchase of equipment and the support of programs. Examples of equipment are the gift of three patient beds, including a highly sophisticated bed for the Intensive Care Unit, costing $30,000, an Ambulatory Fetal Monitor, a chair for Modified Barium Swallow Studies, a Hand Held Pediatric Oximeter, and a Nu-Step TRS-400 exercise unit.

In addition to fundraisers, the Auxiliary runs the Hospital’s Gift Shop, which is located on the first floor of the Hospital. It is staffed entirely by volunteers, including the managers, and raises a substantial amount of money for the Hospital. The Auxiliary has contracted with Honey Dew Donuts to run the Hospital’s Coffee Shop and a portion of each purchase benefits the Auxiliary.

The Auxiliary also helps the local community in other ways. Every year, it provides a tuition scholarship to five area residents who are pursuing studies for a career in healthcare. An annual Bridge Luncheon is held to support our Scholarship fund for four of the scholarships. The fifth is given in memory of Mary C. Pucci, a longtime Auxilian, whose family has set up a fund to honor her.

The most important service Auxilians can provide is as to act as goodwill ambassadors for Westerly Hospital. By staying abreast of the business of the Hospital, the Auxiliary provides the community at large with an insider’s view, from the modern addition and renovations, to the new and expanded services offered.
