The Westerly Hospital
one of the first in the Southeast region
to use computer-aided technology for breast MRI
|
The Westerly
Hospital recently
began using computer aided detection (CAD) technology for breast
MRI. This CAD technology is an
intensive breast cancer screening used to detect breast cancer at its
earliest stages for women with a higher risk of developing breast cancer,
including those with a strong family history of
the disease or with a genetic mutation that predisposes them to breast
cancer.
The CAD technology for breast MRI is
not only used for early detection in women who are considered high risk,
but also is recommended for all women diagnosed with breast cancer at the
time of diagnosis, and can help in evaluating response to chemotherapy or
hormonal therapy, and any need for surgery.
Dale Porter, Director
of Diagnostic Imaging at The Westerly Hospital, stated “The CAD
system helps our radiologists quickly and efficiently collect the
hundreds of images from a women’s breast MRI, and then analyzes
them in way that assists the radiologist in detecting any malformations
or masses in the breast. When the computer finds anything unusual, it
indicates it on a screen for the radiologist to take a “second
look.”
Porter added, “We have been using CAD technology for
mammography for some time, and the CAD system
for breast MRI is a welcomed addition to our overall Woman's Breast
Health program offered here at the Westerly Hospital.”
