Support Groups

Below is a list of the support groups offered at Westerly Hospital. No registration is required for support groups unless noted otherwise below. All support groups are free and open to anyone. For information on a support group, call 401-348-2300 or 1-800-933-5960, extension 3423.

Arthritis Interest Group
This group is designed for anyone with any type of arthritis.  Sessions are held three or four times a year at the Westerly Senior Center located at 39 State Street in Westerly.  For information, call the Rehabilitation Department at 401-348-3346 or 1-800-933-5960, extension 3346.

Diabetes Support
2nd Wednesday of every month, 7pm – 8:30pm at Westerly Hospital’s Nardone Conference Center.  Please note that the group does not meet during the months of July and August.

The group focuses on concerns of diabetics, how to deal with a diabetes diagnosis, psychosocial aspects of diabetes, common emotional reactions, and dealing with the transition of living with diabetes.  The group is facilitated by Herb Nieburg, PhD, a psychologist and associate professor at Mitchell College who deals with health-related issues and Mark Rogers, PharmD, CDOE, Clinical Pharmacist at Westerly Hospital and site coordinator of the Hospital’s Diabetes Education Program. Grief Support
Six-week sessions are periodically offered at the hospital and are facilitated by Home and Hospice Care of Rhode Island.  The sessions are intended to provide participants with skills and strategies to cope with the loss of a loved one. Post Polio Syndrome Support
Third Saturday of the month, 10am – 12pm in Westerly Hospital’s Henry J. Nardone Conference Center. The group is faciliated by a community member who is also a polio survivor. The group is intended to provide resources, information, and support for those who have been stricken with polio and are now experiencing symptoms associated with post-poliomyelitis. Scoliosis Support
The group consists of members who have scoliosis and various other spine problems, and offers support and information. This group is facilitated by a community member who has undergone scoliosis spine surgery. For more information call 401 348-8085.

The “Sensational” Child: Families with Special Needs Children
This program is run by a member of the community. Second Thursday of the month, 6pm – 8pm, Westerly Hospital’s Henry J. Nardone Conference Center. This program is run by a member of the community.
