Volunteer Opportunities at The Westerly Hospital

 

The Westerly Hospital relies heavily on volunteers who provide numerous services that benefit patients and staff alike.  Currently, over 300 volunteers ranging in age from 14 to 90, both male and female, donate their time on a weekly basis.  If you are interested in volunteering for one of the opportunities listed below, please contact:

Couriers

Students 15 years of age and adults offer assistance to all departments of the hospital. 8 hours of training is required. Duties include discharging patients, delivering food trays, running errands, transporting patients and much more. Must be able to walk for extended periods of time and push a person in a wheel chair.

 

Pre Admission Testing (PAT) Volunteer

Assist with the flow and paperwork required of patients who are coming in for pre-admission testing.  Adults are required to fill these positions during the day.  Shifts will be 3 hours.

 

Hospice Volunteers

Anyone 18 years and older offer support to Hospice patients and their families. Training through Hospice, a minimum of 10 hours to qualify to be a Hospice volunteer. Full training would be necessary to follow patient from home to hospital. 

 

Gift Shop

Students 14 years of age and adults perform retail duties. 2 hours of training is required. Shifts are 3 hours long.

 

Emergency Department

Students 15 years of age and adults assist staff with daily work routine, make rounds on patients and their families to see if they are in need of special assistance (other than medical). 8 hours of training in the ED is required.

 

Mammography
Winter substitutes are needed. Volunteer greets patients entering department, makes certain they’ve registered, and gives them the proper paperwork to fill out. Also looking for volunteers to make reminder telephone calls to patients.

 

CT Scan 
Adult needed to assist staff on Tuesday mornings.  2 hours of training is required.

 

Comfort Cart
Volunteer visits the Medical and Surgical Units offering patients crossword puzzles, stress balls, games, music etc. free of charge on a daily basis.  Mornings or afternoons are required.
