Biography - Paul Lleva, MD

Paul Lleva, MD is a general and vascular neurologist, and an assistant professor of clinical neurology at Yale School of Medicine.

Dr. Lleva first became interested in neurology while attending medical school at the University of Santo Tomas where he was captivated by the biology behind the nervous system. “I was blessed to be trained by neurologists who showed great passion and skill in localizing disorders of the nervous system,” says Dr. Lleva.

After medical school, Dr. Lleva pursued a three-year residency training in internal medicine followed by another three years of training as a neurology resident. He completed fellowship training in vascular neurology at Westchester Medical Center. Dr. Lleva believes that his training in internal medicine complements his subspecialty in stroke well. “Most strokes are associated with medical risk factors that can be modified,” says Dr. Lleva. “My background in internal medicine helps me broaden my perception in evaluating stroke patients and makes me comfortable in treating critical neurological conditions.”

Although a stroke specialist, Dr. Lleva sees general neurology cases as well. “I love every aspect of neurology, which is why I evaluate and treat various neurological disorders.” In a typical patient encounter, Dr. Lleva attempts to explain the condition in understandable terms. “I try to make sure that my patients understand their condition and treatment plan before they leave the office,” says Dr. Lleva. He also focuses on primary and secondary stroke prevention strategies.

For Dr. Lleva, the most rewarding part of his job is seeing his patients get better and the positive impacts that has on families. “Stroke can catch anybody off guard,” he says. “It is uplifting to see patients get better, and to see happy faces on follow up; it reminds me why I chose this profession.”
