I am excited to write to you as the President of the newly integrated Yale New Haven Hospital Auxiliary. At our first Board meeting in October, I was delighted to see that the integration was seamless and I look forward to working with such a committed and engaged Board.

The Glass Door Gift Shop

In the 1960s, the Saint Raphael Auxiliary opened a gift shop to serve patients, families and staff and to raise money to support the hospital. Over the years, hundreds of volunteers dedicated thousands of hours to waiting on customers and boosting sales.

Annual Meeting

More than 135 members and supporters of the Yale New Haven and Hospital of Saint Raphael auxiliaries came together September 23 for the YNHH Auxiliary’s 62nd annual meeting – a week before the two organizations became one. The auxiliaries officially integrated October 1, after nearly two years of work to join the two institutions, each with long histories of supporting their hospitals and the community.

Toy closet overflows with holiday deliveries

The Toy Closet program kicked off with the Annual Walter Camp Foundation Toy Drive at the Yale Football Field in October. Thanks to Barbara Scaramozza and Betty LaBonia for their volunteer efforts that day.

Venison gourmet dinner benefits Toy Closet program

Peggy DeZinno, former president of the Auxiliary and member of the Board of Managers, and husband Gary Olewnik hosted a Venison Dinner on February 3 at Carmine’s Restaurant in New Haven. Diane Petra, chair of the Toy Closet committee, thanked the attendees for their support and explained the history and mission of the Toy Closet.

Health Education Committee

Upcoming Health education lectures include “The Aging Eye,” a lecture and panel discussion with Christopher Teng, MD; Jessica S. Maslin, MD; and Nisha Chadha, MD. The discussion will be held at 7:30 pm on April 16 at Whitney Center, 200 Leeder Hill Drive, Hamden. Dr. Teng will discuss glaucoma, Dr. Maslin will talk about dry eyes and Dr. Chadha will discuss the retina, all in the context of the aging eye.

Betty LaBonia: YNHH Auxiliary President

Betty LaBonia, newly elected president of the Yale New Haven Hospital Auxiliary, has a long history of volunteerism in her community. In addition to serving the Saint Raphael Auxiliary in various leadership roles (including assistant treasurer, treasurer, vice president and president) over the last 20 years, Betty has also contributed her time as a board member at Meriden-Wallingford Hospital, Cheshire Academy, and several business organizations; Citizens Action Refugee Effort (CARE); St. Thomas Becket Women’s Club; North Haven Art League; and the Cheshire Academy Parents Association, where she served as president. With a passion for literacy, Betty has been a teacher’s aide working with children in reading comprehension, set up summer library programs in the North Haven School system, and served as secretary of the Right to Read Council (CT Chapter).

A graduate of Bay Path College, Betty has been a resident of Cheshire for 36 years and is the owner of Platt & LaBonia Company in North Haven, a sheet metal manufacturing company. She enjoys cooking, art, music/dancing and traveling.
