New grade for Spring 2025 is a national recognition for commitment to patient safety
Westerly RI (May 1, 2025) – Two Yale New Haven Health hospitals have earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety. Greenwich Hospital, CT and Westerly Hospital, RI, achieved top scores for the Spring 2025 report.
Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.
“The safety of our patients is our most important priority and the focus of every interaction, every decision and every patient-care plan,” said Richard Lisitano, president, Westerly Hospital. “I’m extremely proud of our team at Westerly Hospital for their exceptional performance and collaboration in keeping our patients safe in our care.”
“This is an outstanding achievement for Westerly Hospital,” said Oliver Mayorga, chief medical officer, Westerly Hospital. “As a high reliability organization we strive to consistently perform safely, efficiently and with high quality.”
This is the second consecutive “A” grade for Westerly Hospital, which also achieved an “A” in the Fall 2022 report.
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade rates the safety of general hospitals in the United States. The grade is based on over 30 measures, including the number of errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the hospital's systems to prevent them. The program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
“This recognition is testament to an unwavering commitment to patient safety and dedication in providing the highest level of care possible,” Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, stated. “An “A” grade reflects will on your institutional culture and tells prospective employees, patients and clinicians that your hospitals are a leader in keeping patients safe.”
