Cancer (Oncology)

The Smilow Cancer Hospital Care Center at Westerly Hospital provides access to expert cancer care and treatment for patients in southwestern Rhode Island.

Comprehensive outpatient cancer services, including consultation, screening, diagnosis and treatment are available on site. Surgeries may be performed at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital or at Yale New Haven Hospital.

Clinical Services

  • Diagnostic imaging services include Bone Density Scan, Breast MRI, Digital Mammography, Gamma Imaging, MRI, PET/CT Scan and X-ray. Automated Whole Breast Ultrasound screenings can detect even extremely small cancers in women with dense breasts tissue. A 128-slice CT scan machine captures high-quality imaging with lower doses of radiation. Lung cancer screening is performed with a low-dose CT scanner.
  • Genetic counseling is offered by the Smilow Cancer Center Genetics and Prevention Screening Program, part of Yale Cancer Center.
  • Medical oncology services include chemotherapy and infusion treatments.
  • Laboratory and pathology services are available on site, providing prompt and accurate results from an expert team of pathologists, phlebotomists, medical technologists and technicians.
  • Nutritional services are provided by registered dietitians and nutritionists at Smilow Cancer Hospital who work with patients to develop personalized nutrition plans aimed at preventing or controlling disease.
  • Rehabilitative and supportive care services are provided by hospital staff trained to assist cancer patients with the side effects of cancer treatment, such as “chemo brain,” fatigue and lymphedema.

Additional services at the care center include:

  • A cancer registry that collects cancer patient data to monitor outcomes and to identify opportunities for improvement in care.
  • Clinical social work services at Smilow Cancer Hospital are provided by a full-time, oncology social worker to help patients and their families cope with diagnosis and treatment.
  • Tumor boards to ensure the best outcome possible for cancer patients. The General Tumor Board and the Breast Cancer Tumor Board are composed of dedicated teams of physicians which consider the latest national treatment recommendations and work to determine the most appropriate treatment regimen for patients whose cases are being presented.
