Westerly Hospital makes significant community investment

Thursday, March 8, 2018

WESTERLY, RI (March 8, 2018) – Westerly Hospital today provided a $50,000 grant to South County Habitat for Humanity in order to renovate local properties and improve access to affordable housing in the community.

“The evidence is clear – housing and health are inextricably linked,” said Patrick Green, president and CEO of Westerly Hospital. “People who reside in unstable or substandard housing are more likely to have health issues. Housing stability contributes to healthy lifestyles, healthy neighborhoods and a greater sense of community pride.”

In 2016, Westerly Hospital provided more than $3 million in benefits to the community, coming in the form of guaranteed access to care, advancing health care careers, promoting health and wellness, building strong neighborhoods and creating a healthier community. Westerly Hospital is committed to the community, Green said, noting that while continuing to provide high quality care, the organization will work to grow its presence outside of the hospital and enhance involvement in community organizations and activities.

Green also noted that Westerly Hospital is committed to more than just financial support. “Sweat equity is a part of our commitment, too,” he said. “Our staff is ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work to assist in these restoration projects and help build a better, healthier community.”

“Affordable housing remains a critical issue across the country, across the state of Rhode Island and even in the town of Westerly,” said Colin Penney, executive director of South County Habitat for Humanity. “Today, many families need to make choices between their housing costs, purchasing food or taking their family members to the doctors. Many factors determine a family’s health and that includes a healthy living environment. Our partnership with Westerly Hospital allows us to work together, to help build stronger, healthier and more affordable area neighborhoods.”
