Managing Your Diabetes Education Program

If you have diabetes, Westerly Hospital offers a comprehensive, five-week group education course to help you gain practical knowledge and skills needed to manage diabetes successfully. Conducted by a multidisciplinary team of our dieticians, nurses and pharmacists, all Certified Diabetes Outpatient Educators (CDOE), the program is accredited by the American Association of Diabetes Educators and meets the highest standards of care for diabetes education.

With a physician’s referral, many health insurers will cover the cost of these sessions. Be sure to call your individual health insurance provider to determine if your plan covers diabetes education sessions.

The course covers:
  • The fundamentals of nutritional management
  • Label reading and meal planning options
  • Guidelines for eating out and special occasions
  • Glucose monitoring
  • Medication management
  • Insulin treatment and administration
  • Sick-day care
  • Foot care
  • Exercise and stress management
  • Prevention of complications
